Black History, Health and the Black Church play such an intricate role in our history. In
1758 Francis Williams knew that he could achieve and today he is known as the first
Black College graduate. Because of an “I CAN DO IT” attitude, in 1788 Andrew
Bryan was ordained and organized the first Black Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia.
As we well know, Blacks are now challenged with various health disparities such as
heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, hypotension and HIV/AIDS that seem to hit our
community more vastly than others. Let us give honor to Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who
is known today as the first African American to successfully perform heart surgery in
1892. In 1971 the National Black Nurses Association was organized to create equal
access to health care; however we are all aware that black nurses “unofficially” had
been practicing for years without the titles or simply know as a “Mid-wife”.
Ladies…..think you’re cute? Let’s honor Madam C.J. Walker for the wonderful
invention of the hot comb because clearly we would still have some issues with our
“kitchen” had she not given us this invention. Gentleman…..you don’t like to iron? Let’s
honor G.T. Sampson for the invention of the clothes dryer.
The infamous tennis player Arthur Ashe was stricken with hemophilia but because of
Charles Drew, the inventor of blood plasma, Mr. Ashes’ life was prolonged. Although
the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment was conducted in a malicious way, today it has paved
the way for Clinical trials that seek cures for Breast Cancer, Alzheimer and even
HIV/AIDS.
Our black history trails as far back as the 1700s and as recent as Tony Dungy, the First
Black NFL Head Coach to win the Super Bowl in 2007 and more recently with Oprah
Winfrey purchasing her very own television network titled Oprah Winfrey Network
(OWN)….now that’s Black History.
